A Study on the Amounts of Metal Elements of Dustfall by Yellow Sand Phenomenon and Non-Yellow Sand Phenomenon in Suwon City

Abstract
During the period from Jan. to Dec., 1998 and Yellow Sand phenomena, dustfall samples were collected by simple deposit jar and petridish in Suwon. The objects of this study were to investigate the deposition amounts of dustfall, to grasp the monthly, seasonal behavior and to measure the amount of deposits of fourteen metal elements(Al, Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na,
Pb, Sr, Ti, V, Zn) by inductively coupled plasma(ICP). And the principal component analysis(PCA) were carried out with respect to these amount of deposits. The results of this study were as fellows; year average value of total deposition amounts of dustfall was 6.570 ton/km2/month and Yellow Sand phenomena average value of deposits amount of dustfall was
53.68 ton/km2/month, which showed about 8 times as high level as the average value during the non-Yellow Sand period. Total deposition amounts of dustfall showed saesonal trend of spring> winter> autumn> summer. The metal elements in dustfall were mainly six species such as Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na during non-Yellow Sand period and Yellow Sand phenomenon. The form of existence of metal elements in dustfall were mainly particle form for Al, Fe and Ti
and mainly soluble for Ca, Na and Sr. As a result of PCA, the amount of deposits of metal elements was able to characterized with three principal components(Zi, Z2, Z3). The first principal component Zi was considered to be a factor indicating the degree of synthetic amount of deposits. The second principal component Z2 was a factor indicating the contribution of sources such as natural and artificial sources. The third principal component Z3 was a factor indicating the contribution of such as soil and non-soil sources within natural sources.
